Google Mobile: How to Easily Send Free SMS from Gmail

As the world is growing regarding M-Commerce, Google, a major player on the internet is also offering a medium where you can easily interact with your friends even when they are not online.

 

You can send Free SMS messages to your contacts’ mobile phones using Gmail Chat. To do so from Gmail:

 

From Gmail, click on Settings, and go to the Labs tab. Scroll down until you see “Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat” and select Enable. Also enable the “SMS in Chat gadget” and then Save Changes. You can send free texts to your friends in the US and many countries around the world.

 

How to send a SMS from Gmail

1. Log into your Gmail account. In the Send SMS box above Chat, enter the phone number you want to send a SMS to.

 

 

2. In the dialog box, enter Contact name of the SMS recipient and check that country and phone number are correct. Then, click Save.

 

 

3. Type your message in the chat window and hit Enter.

 

 

4. Your message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

 

 

If your contact replies, the text message response will appear as a reply in Chat. These conversations are stored in your Chat history just like regular chats (but keep in mind that you can’t go off the record while communicating via SMS).

 

Note regarding mobile phone subscribers in North America: depending on which mobile plans your contacts in North America have, they may be charged by their mobile providers for receiving text messages.

 

Note regarding phone subscribers of Pelephone in Israel: your contacts on the Pelephone network will be receive your SMS messages for free, and will be charged for replying according to Telephone’s pricelist for core service. Special rates and packages do not apply.

 

Note regarding mobile phone subscribers in Zambia: your contacts in Zambia will receive SMS messages for free, and will be charged for replying according to their operator’s price for sending an international SMS to the USA.

 

In addition, Google Mobile is part of Google’s SMS applications. Others are;

 

1. Google Voice SMS

Send and receive SMS text messages through the Google Voice

Google Calendar SMS

Check your calendar when you’re on the go. To do this, register your mobile phone by going to google.com/calendar and completing Settings > Mobile Setup. You will receive SMS text message notifications for upcoming events on your calendar. You can cancel Calendar SMS notifications whenever you want.

 

To receive a notification with your calendar information, send a text message containing one of the following commands to the shortcode 48368 (GVENT):

 

NEXT – Request your next scheduled event
DAY – Request all your scheduled events for the present day
NDAY – Request your events scheduled for the following day
STOP – Opt out of receiving SMS messsages from Google Calendar on your phone

Blogger SMS

Send SMS text messages and post to your blog from anywhere. To get this done, first send an SMS with the word “REGISTER” to 256447 (BLOGGR). Google will reply with the address of your new mobile blog. Post to your new mobile blog by sending SMS text messages to 256447 (BLOGGR). Your SMS posts will show up on your blog on the web. Google will also send you a claim code that you can use to go on the web and customize your blog.

 

Send these commands to 256447 (BLOGGR):

REGISTER – Start a new blog from your phone over SMS
HELP – Get help from your phone
STOP – Opt out of receiving SMS messsages from Blogger on your phone
UNREGISTER – Unlink your phone from Blogger
